So, there's something that really bothers me about religion and politics. So many people that I've met offline or talked to on here have said or implied that liberals or atheists are the only people that are open-minded, and that conservatives and people who are religious are close-minded and unaccepting of others' beliefs.
Now, my sister is a liberal athiest, and she is just about the most close-minded person that I know. I am also a liberal and agnostic, but living in the Bible Belt has shown me that while many people are close-minded and always will be, that fact does not change according to religious/political affiliation, and it really irks me to hear people be so hypocritical.

There's zealots on both sides. I just think that the rabid fundies in Christianity are more loudmouthed about it, and get more media attention.

What is true openmindedness?  They may accept what others believe but not be for it.

I am sure people can be close or open minded no matter their beliefs or lack of.

I know for me, I am morally conservative and economically liberal.

I guess it is just how people are raised. I was raised as a Catholic but my family always told me to to listen. I am open-minded. I hear what the other religions and other ideas people have. I do believe what they say and other times I don't. But that's just me. Everyone else have their own ideas and if they choose to listen to others or not.

Both can be closed-minded morons, but liberals do seem to be more accepting of others beliefs.

Really? My impression has been that liberals are more of the "do as I say, not as I do" mindset; politically, economically and religiously.

My impression with conservatives is just the simple 'Do as I say' mindset.

Liberals only seem to be accepting of liberal beliefs to me.
If you have a liberal who doesn't go so far as to believe in the legalisation of hard drugs for instance, they'll probably be tolerant of the more liberal belief in legalising hard drugs. However they will be intolerant of less liberal beliefs like not legalising any drugs or not legalising gay marriage or whatever.

I sometimes get the feeling liberals who don't accept the most liberal beleifs feel guilty about not being more liberal, but see people less liberal than them as simply bigoted and are unable to comprehend the idea someone could disagree with the liberal weltanschauung.

Like I said, both can be closed-minded. Its in my experience that most liberals really dont care what others believe, because if they really believed in liberty, it doesnt matter what others believe as long as they dont impose it on others. Also in my experience, conservatives seem to love to do that. Then again, Im only 21 and havent met every conservative and liberal on the planet.
