Treat the house and treat the yard... no matter what flea preventitives you put on, they won't work properly until the environment is treated. We sale a pill called "Capstar" which kills all the fleas on the animal within the first 30 minutes. After giving the cat a capstar you can then apply a flea product such as Frontline, Advantage or Revolution.
You can get a flea spray for the house called Mycodex Environmental control. It works amazingly well and is safe for bedding and carpet.
