I hear a lot of people (often citing Dawkins...) saying that it is wrong, even to the point of being child abuse to bring up a child in a religion.
I find the idea a bit absurd but I wonder how common the belief is.

Dawkins himself said that teaching children religion is actually more abusive than sexually abusing them.

It is wrong, children should learn for themselves and make their own stand point as they grow

I don't see how it's wrong to bring up a child with the parents' beliefs, and bringing them up without religion isn't any different from bringing them up with it, it's just different beliefs. When they are mature enough, they can decide for themselves what they want to believe.

there is no way that bringing up a child with a religious background is worse than raping them, but i don't know why someone would raise their child to be religious. in my case my parents aren't religious but we went to catholic mass for a long time. what's up with that

What's wrong with raising your child to be religious?

Obviously, if he or she does not agree with your views, he or she will not follow your religion, anyway.

Basically, the decision is ultimately the kid's.

It is wrong to teach children lies.

I would say it is wrong to teach children things that are not true, but that someone who in good faith and having made a sincere effort to discover the truth believes what they are teaching is true cannot be blamed for their errors.

I don't think religious people bring up their children are deliberately lying to their children.

When I have children, I'm not going to bring them up religiously. I'll allow them to learn about different religions as they grow up and they can choose their own.

Child abuse? Hardly.

Children will ultimately make their own decisions, but when I have kids they'll go to church, maybe not every Sunday, but I want them to grow up with some of the same morals I grew up with.

You should let them choose what they want to believe, rather than influencing them with your views.
