Question about Islamic hell

For Muslims is hell the same in your religion as it is for Christians? Someone told me that in Islam hell isn't for eternity most of the time, instead you suffer until you pay for your sins, which might take a day or a billion years, but eventually you do get to heaven eventually, is that true?

Yes, you are allowed back up to heaven after Allah thinks you have paid for your sins. And anybody who is from the other Abrahamic religions (Judaism and Christianity) are allowed in heaven after being in Hell a while, which may seem cruel, but it better than Christianity's eternity.
