I thought taxes got paid automatically out of your wages .. from the amount you get paid..?

They are, but if you get a refund, you need to do it yourself. And, if you owe more due to other sources that aren't directly taxed, such as tips, then you need to do your taxes.

And please claim at least some tips. If you don't, have fun dealing with the IRS.
