For the past two years I've gone to a uniform school, so the art of back to school shopping is a little lost to me.  :)

What I need to know is, where can I find a basic list of what kind of clothes I should get?  Just the basics-I can build on that.  I just don't want to go blindly into the mall and buy too much of one thing and not enough of another.  I have shoes and makeup covered, I just want to stick to clothes in this thread.

So what is a good list of basics that I should purchase?

It's not complex, really. Just get as many pants or jeans, blouses, undies, and socks as you have as days of school and over the semester,  you can build up your wardrobe.

At least a couple pairs of nice jeans.  Start with about six or seven t-shirts, and a couple nice collared shirts.  You might like a new sweatshirt.

Get some converse low-tops or some skater shoes.  Etnies are still pretty popular.  AirWalks are also nice.

Jeans, khakis, other types of pants.
T-shirts, blouses, tanks, camis...
Sweaters, vests, stuff like that.

Belts, accessories.

Start by figuring out what sort of colors you like that look great on you.  Take an honest friend with you when you go shopping.

Jeans are ALWAYS good.  You can get them in all styles and shades and not all denim is super thick so you can wear them year round.  There are relaxed fits and dressier fits for casual work and dates and stuff.

T-shirts are obviously a must.  Figure out what type is going to flatter your body.  Almost everyone looks better in tops that are longer and go at least to their belt buckle.  I like v-neck shirts better because they are more flattering on me.  Some people like crew and boat neck.  Find them in cotton or cotton/ploy blends.  The best place to find really basic, well fitting shirts would be American Apparel.  They are pricy but the shirts I have didn't fade and I love love love them.  They come in EVERY color!

A basic hoodie is always nice to have.  You can also get those in every color and style!

You should purchase a peacoat or some other classic style jacket.

Always stick with basics and dress an outfit up with accessories, makeup, and shoes.  {unless you have one really unique piece that you want to show off}

Oh, and I suggest going to some place like Target {or any other superstore} to get mens undershirts!  I wear them under everything and they are great for the summer time.

Basic pencil skirts are good too.  I like them when they go about to my knee or a few inches above.

Let's see... Do you have sweaters?  You should get some nice fitting sweaters in whatever material you like.

When it comes to basics and wardrobe staples, it never hurts to buy multiples of items you fall in love with.  Stick to classic items!  I cannot stress this enough.  They never go out of style and can be updated so easily.
