Since I have been feeling depressed, I have not been able to sleep. I'm planning on going to the drugstore today and getting anti-depressants. I hope I don't need a prescription from my doctor  .  Or maybe there are some on the shelf that do not need to be prescribed. Will these things also help me sleep?

Nope.

Get melatonin.

Easier to get and far more effective. It's available in vitamin shops.

No, sometimes they have the opposite effect and will keep you up. I'd go with warm milk.

Oh, and you do need a prescription because generally, they're for people who are actually depressed. Wouldn't sleeping pills be ideal?

You need a prescription for anti-depressants. If a doctor has diagnosed you they'll be able to help you. But no, anti-depressants don't help with sleeping problems.

the only way to get anti-depressants is by a prescription from a doctor. you need to be evaluated and deemed depressed. just because you all of a sudden have some stress in your life that's putting you in s slump, yo're not clinically depressed. the medicine balances the chemicals in your brain. since yours are balanced, they wouldn't do anything but possibly make you high. and no, they don't help you sleep. and if you're wondering how i know all this, i was on them for 2 years. i hate people who make a joke about anti-depressants. get some sleeping pills. you don't have a chemical imbalance unless a physiatric doctor tells you you do.

Avoid drugs if you can- they are all temporary and can sometimes bring on different problems.

In general, try keeping the same bedtime each day, have a little ritual before bed-mine is reading in bed. Warm milk sometimes helps (mine is chocolate!) but too much interrupts your sleep by getting you up to go to the bathroom. Have a dark, quiet room if you can and get up the same time in the mornings, even on weeekends. Avoid exercise and food before going to bed.
