They are helpful. I commute and have to stay on campus between classes. Bringing my laptop I can check the internet, write papers, etc. I don't use it to take notes since I am a mathematics major and all upper-level math is symbols which take longer to compose on a computer than to write on paper. I could see where a history major or something could use a laptop for notes. I actually need to buy a new laptop- mine is starting to break down.

Again, folks...don't just assume you're going to be allowed to use a laptop for classroom notetaking. You cannot just walk into class, and pull out the laptop, and start typing away. Ask your professors, prior to your first day of class, what their rules are, regarding laptops.
