In the classroom: Perhaps.
Outside of the classroom: YES. For writing papers and doing homework, obviously. And you can never rely on campus computers, because ALOT of other students use them, so they likelyhood of one being available when you need it isn't very good.

The first two things that come to mind for me:

1) If you're living in dorms, think of how much space you'll be able to save with a laptop vs. a desktop.

2) Can take your work with you if you go home for the weekend, without accidentally forgetting to back up a certain important file if you have to go in a rush.

It's not TOTALLY necessary, but it makes life a lot simpler.  Even if you're not in college it does.

I prefer to take notes by hand because I can remember them better.

I'd get a desktop because you probably won't even use the laptop much for its intended purpose. It's more of a fad.

More and more professors aren't allowing laptops in class.
It's convenient to take notes but you have to also realize that you have the opportunity to check things online during class [such as LW] and can distract you from the classroom experience.

No it doesn't.

I don't know which schools you are go to. But in my university, there's a ton of open computers all over the place to use at your pleasure.

at some schools you can check out one for the semester or whatever, but others don't.

It depends on whether or not your professors allow the use of a laptop in the classroom. Mine don't. So, a laptop for class is pointless.

And, well, it's quite binding, especially if you live in a dorm, where you're bound to an enthernet cable, and you're trying to type up notes, and you want to move around, and you can't, b/c of that cord, and the plug.

There are tons of students who take laptops to class. It's totally normal and allowed.

Again, it depends on the professor. It's not always allowed. I've never had it allowed. Typing is a distraction in the classroom. The clicking of the keys is in adherance (spelling) to the professor's words.

Also, as for essays...again, it depends on your professor. Some professors don't allow typed essays. They prefer the written.

Ask before you assume.

You'll of course want a computer for college.

However, I am an extremely fast typist and my notes are much better, more in-depth, and more informative when taken on paper, especially because they can be supplemented with explanatory figures without any problems.

I got a laptop for college and I consistently brought only notebooks and pens to class.
