I'm thinking about making an attempt at the test, (I'm not sure if I'd pass) but before I do, I wanted to discuss it. Some people tell me its just a bunch of rich self-righteous people wanting to make themselves feel better than everyone. But thats not why I want in! If I'm in Mensa, won't employers and colleges look at that and count that as a + for you? Or maybe it really is just a waste of money and is only there for snobby dick wads that want to feel good about themselves. Whats your take on it? Are any of you in Mensa?

For the MENSA test, not the Intellectual test.

No I'm not, but I think that it could be a good idea. However, it probably is full of self righteous dickwads. You just have to take the good with the bad. In any case, good luck with it! I hear that its ridiculously hard.

Try taking the like trial mensa test online. I am going to guess it is alot easier than the real thing. I got a score saying i have a good chance of passing but the questions did not seem to take much thought so it may not be an accurate guess. Good luck.

Mensa groups vary wildly by region.  Try finding out some information about your local group and ask members what the atmosphere is like.

I'll be honest: I don't see the point in societies like Mensa. It's all well and good to be able to hold up a membership card (or whatever they have) and say, "I am the smartest!" but when it comes to the real world (read: working world), I've found (to my chagrin) that employers care more about your experience in a specific field than about how high your test scores were.

I've never taken the Mensa test, but I do have a whole laundry list of intellectual accomplishments (Dean's Lists, NHS, studying at Oxford, 3.5-3.8 GPA from high school on, etc.). I've found that in my job hunting in the past three years, not one of my employers cared that I'd made the Dean's List in college. They all wanted to know how much experience I had in any given field (healthcare, office management, sales, advertising, etc.).

So that's just been my experience. Obviously, ymmv, but I don't know many people who would consider you more for a position because of your Mensa membership than someone who didn't have that membership but had more experience.

I applied to MENSA when I was 10, and never got in. I really couldn't care less, even then. I think it's such a pretentious society - and honestly, all it proves is that you're good at the kind of questions they ask on that test.

Although it did tell me my IQ, which is the only good thing about having taken it.

That tends to be the problem with standardized testing...someone could be an absolute genius, but if they don't have a specific aptitude for the type of questions being asked, they're seen as a moron.

Exactly. MENSA just proves you're good at those questions. Nothing else.
