Shit! No good news at all. The US needs to stay out of this.

Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili is expected to declare martial law within hours, according to the Georgian security council chief, Reuters reported. This comes after Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called on Russia Friday to halt attacks in South Ossetia, after Georgian troops entered the breakaway province in an attempt to crush separatist forces seeking control. Rice's announcement came as the European Union was working on a cease-fire with Georgia and South Ossetia separatists to end the violent conflict. Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, launched a surprise military offensive to retake South Ossetia and reportedly killed hundreds of people, triggering a ferocious counterattack from Russia that threatened to plunge the region into full-scale war.
The United States was sending its top Caucasus envoy, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza, to the region to try to end the bloodshed. Russia, which has granted citizenship to most of the region's residents, appeared to lay much of the responsibility for ending the fighting on Washington. In a telephone conversation with Rice, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Georgia must be convinced to withdraw its forces, according to a ministry statement. Georgia has about 2,000 troops in Iraq, making it the third-largest contributor to coalition forces after the U.S. and Britain. But Saakashvili said that the troops would be called home Saturday in the face of the South Ossetia fighting. Georgia, which borders the Black Sea between Turkey and Russia, was ruled by Moscow for most of the two centuries preceding the breakup of the Soviet Union. Georgia has angered Russia by seeking NATO membership — a bid Moscow regards as part of a Western effort to weaken its influence in the region.
looks like the repukes are eager to get us into it. Anyone ready for another world war? Because with the war in iraq and aghanistan and russia at war we're getting there fast.... Post edited at 3:58 pm on Aug. 8, 2008 by jakelong

Russia may be corrupt but Georgia is not a beacon of liberty either. Georgia sounds to be at fault here. They started military action, probably took the olympics into account when planning so they could try to be in a situation to avoid a large retaliation by russia. They would not have been stupid enough to go on the offensive against South Ossetia if they didn't assume the US would help them no matter what as well.

Your lack of knowledge shows. It is a small local conflict. It is not anything major. Ossetia is very small. not many people live there ethier.

Not only that but the US needs those georgians to go on fighting in iraq! It wouldn't be good if they just died for their own country.

This is essentially my view of the conflict. Neither side is really in any better moral standing over the other, and any attempt to claim one side is in the right or wrong seems to be the result of whether that person likes or dislikes Russia. The US seems to be in a pretty sticky situation since it is in their interests to not provoke Russia, but also in their interests to not abandon Georgia (a country who, after the US and British, has had the 3rd largest force in Iraq - a good ally). Looks like the US will be stuck giving some help to Georgia, and whatever help the US will give Georgia will only justify Russia's helping Iran in the future, especially if the conflict between the US and Iran intensifies any further.
