Close-ups [or macros] are not automatically amazing. And don't try too hard or it will show. Just go with your instinct. If you see a shot that you think looks good go for it and you'll learn from experience what makes a nice picture and what doesn't.
And you might want to look up some of the basics of composition. [this site looks decent: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/digital-photography-composition-tips/ ]
And like some others have said, good lighting.

Composition is probably the best tip anybody could give you. Frame your subject and be aware of exactly what is in your frame. Look for subtle things like pieces of rubbish or a lamposts in your shot which could be avoided by re-composing. A basic photograghpy course is the best way to go and having a Digital SLR camera is an advantage

Just go out there and snap away. Try all sorts of settings and techniques till you find something you like.

For me, I'm currently trying to figure out how to use my infrared filter correctly.

center it.

actually, no, use the rule of thirds and leading lines more than centering, only center on certain things, i can't think of an example right now though.
