Did it occur to you that maybe we just didn't see your topic?
It's been here almost 3 full days now. And I know 'some' Mods have seen it and left without comment.

And my point is not about 'sexy' stories. It's about the language used in everyday topics. The fuss made about avatars/images more or less boiled down to what was appropriate for the 'younger' members to see and yet no one seems to notice that the "vulgar and profane" language and descriptions/depictions are both in plain view (topic titles) and within a 'click' of being revealed to anyone of any age. Pictures in Image Baskets have to be accessed just as topics do.

Some language does not set the 'explicit' flag even though parents might object to the language. Other 'innocent' words do set that flag. So turning on the 'filter' doesn't guarantee that someone won't see inappropriate language. But it will mean that they won't see threads that aren't inappropriate.

Fountain of Salmacis's post is pretty much on the money.

I'm wondering how you would like this issue to be fixed?

Children 13+ see vulgar language everywhere they go. Sometimes, depending on the station, they hear it on the radio. They go to school, they hear the language. They possibly hear their parents say "fuck" once or twice in their lives.

I really don't think we can moderate it to that extent. Excessive language we usually take care of. For instance, if all someone says in a topic is language and the topic basically has no meaning at all.

I don't exactly have a huge problem with an option filter changing "fuck" to "flick" and "damn" to "darn." Is this what you are hoping for, or do you want us to edit out or delete every time someone uses language?

This is true. I'm sure IRL even kids too young to get on here are exposed to that. But being so adamant about images and not bothering to monitor the language used on here seems a little hypocritical, no?

Well, if a topic has little/no meaning/purpose, it's deleted for that purpose, not because of unnecessary profanity.

No. I'd just like a consistent, across the board policy. Is this a site that caters to 13 year olds and their parents (primarily) or is it a 'teen' site? In real life, it's the parents who are naive if they believe their kids don't hear this language or see these pictures. But here it seems that certain images are absolutely taboo while almost any language is acceptable.

I don't care which side of the fence, I just think that one side or the other would be much easier to justify. How is it justifiable to block an image and still allow someone to say, "Hey, fuck you, bitch"?

We aren't that strict on images. We don't want any nudity, sexually suggestive material, or depicting harm.

We don't allow descriptions of harm and we only allow sexual material in a support topic (as in, we don't allow "sexy erotica stories).

Define "unnecessary" though. Clearly, we delete it if it makes no sense or if it is there purely for language. As in, you saw the "Fuckity fuck fuck" topic become trashed, right?

Yes, I saw, that. I was one of those(?) who reported it.

But what constitutes "unnecessary" profanity will vary by individual tastes. And who defines "excessive" (the description in the guideline)? The recent discussions about "underwear" comes into play... full coverage underwear is a no-no, but a very revealing swimsuit is fine. How would that attitude translate into moderating the language in a thread? You can say, "I hate my fucking teacher." but not, "I fucked my girlfriend last night."? Who makes that decision?

The swimsuit issue is still being discussed. With excessive language, it is the moderator's discretion until a MER is filed, then the team will decide if it should have been removed or not.

Are there really any significant numbers of posts that have been deleted because of the "vulgar and profane" guideline? That one topic is the only one I know of. And I realize I can be a little biased sometimes so I hesitate to report posts that contain what I would consider to be excessive vulgar language.

To be honest, I only see topics that are extremely excessive trashed.

That's one of the problems with that guideline... it's mostly a matter of personal opinion. I know it's a difficult position and either way someone goes, there are going to be disagreements. But if it falls on the side of the younger members, it has to be more strict, I would think. And that seems to be the direction the image argument is going. So the language problem should follow suit, IMO, if consistency is going to be maintained. That's my point. I'm not advocating one way or the other, only that a consistent policy be followed.

because you can opt out of a thread marked explicit, not someone's ranking or signature.

you're right, when you're under the age of 16 you are incapable of inferring what common slang means, and whether or not they want to view that topic, one that is in the teen sexuality forum
