ALIENWARE!!!
you forgot ALIENWARE!!!!

Alienware sucks ass. They are way over priced, and arent built all that well.

Honestly, brands are pointless. I would say for the money, Dell and HP assemble the best ones, but no matter what you are still better off buying the parts and building it yourself.

Apple over charges for what you get. You pay so much for the OS, its not even funny. Its not even that great of an OS! I do have to admit that the hardware is solid, and they sure are pretty, but they arent really that great of computers.

I had an HP laptop at my old job, it survived a ton of beatings, including one from the top of my car to the ground (it was in the case though).  I was happy with it more than any other system I own personally.

As for what I own, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400, with Core Duo and 2GiB of ram, and it sucks dongs.  I have a PowerMac G4 Dual 1ghz as well as a PowerMac G5 dual 1.8ghz.  The G4 runs Tiger and Debian Etch, and the G5 is not working.  I'm not too fond of MacOS these days but I do prefer PowerPC hardware, which is why I keep these around.

I personally would get an HP if you're in the market for a new system.  Dell is total fail and Mac is just not worth the money since they switched to Intel, nor do I agree with any of the Trusted Computing crap, but that's coming along with [almost] any system that has EFI.

Brand? Questionable.

As for computers themselves, None of the above. Aside from Sony and Compaq, they are all using the same parts.

Macs are too expensive for what you get.
Sonys are outrageously priced for what you get and stick you with proprietary software.
HP and Dell are effectively the same.
Compaq is still the crap end of HP.
Gateway is a stupid Dell.

Build your own. The only brands that really matter when it comes to PCs are the brands of the parts you put in it.
