"My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun"

MY mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun
Coral is far more red than her lips' red:
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damask'd, red and white, 5
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound: 10
I grant I never saw a goddess go,—
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare
As any she belied with false compare.

- William Shakespeare

This poem provides a far greater compliment than any poem that creates "false compare" and that's why it's so great.

Sending your girlfriend unoriginal poems, sayings, or lines and pretending they're your own never works out. You can just google a line of it and you'll find who it really belongs to.

...It's been on past anthologies. I'm pretty sure they don't change them that often, especially not in the last few years.

lol. the major problem with Shakesphere, is that so few people seem to understand exactly what it is he is saying. I was in an honours english class and people had difficulty going through Othello. I'm glad i learnt him though.

It is quite a nice poem, honest and frank and pretty flattering!

Yeah, my teacher seemed pretty amazed I got the meaning of that poem after the first reading, as apparently she's not seen many students get it.

It's not difficult.
