When I was coming home from the cemetary, I noticed a park full of people and the undoubted GLTB flag. This gathering had such a back up because the were in the streets and blocking traffic. I decided to ask one of the people what was going on and a man responded,
"We are finally free to marry people and so really, its our Independence Day".
I didn't know how to feel about this. I was kinda angered because I kinda felt they were taking away the actual meaning of today, but then I thought about how the whole meaning of today was to let people be who they are.
But I am kinda unsure. I am a soldier, so I was thinking, today is for those came before me. For those who had such bravery to stand up and say, "We will be free of tyranny". And GLTB weren't really under any tyranny from the government.
I am just a tad confused....

well i kind of think that over the years fourth of july has a more vague deffinition.. more so just that we are supposed to be free in america, and in that respect, for those before us who never were allowed the great pleasure of walking down the isle with their lover, they were denied something that all americans, and EVERYONE deserves, happiness! and so for those here and now, able to say "this is my wife" or "this is my husband" legally, this is a freedom to them, and i respect your reaction to such a subject, i must say i truly do. and in that situation, i believe the best thing to congratulate them, and go about your buissness.

Everyone has a right to their own independence no matter how they interpret the word. You have no right to look down on them or favor your own independence over theirs. That's like agreeing with George Bush.

"Sir, I exist!"
"However," replied the universe,
"The fact has not created in me a sense of obligation."

Are you actually scolding me?
BTW, I do support George Bush.

Not all groups in America have had the same rights. The rights of young people, of children who were not firstborn, of women, of racial minorities, of the disabled and sick, of the mentally ill, and YES, of GLBT people have all come at different times.

We all want to believe in the freedom of America, but some of us have looked at other Americans and thought, "they have had the chance to do more." So when gay people say, "this is our day," they are conveying the message that now for the first time they feel treated equally and feel they have the same opportunities.

And frankly, without gay marriage (not civil unions, but full and through marriage), GLB people were unable to spend money, own propoerty, use government bureaus, and form families using the same avenues and labels as their straight counterparts. So there is a new freedom for us. What else would you expect us to say on the 4th.

By improving opportunities and freedoms for different groups in an attempt to equalize the CHANCES for everybody to function in a meritocracy, we are all made better.

Also, what about Bush do you support? I support his AIDS funding, but not the Global Gag Rule, his imperialist adventure (Iraq), his bungled chance to really reduce terror (Afghanistan), his useless prison in Guantanamo Bay, his alliance with oil companies, his politicization of the judiciary, the EPA, and the military, his refusal to mandate positive environmental actions, his use of gays as a target in order to be reelected, and the list goes ON. What about him do YOU support?
