Ayn Rand is an author who wrote books such as The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, Anthem etc. She was russian and rejected communism and helped to foudn the philosophical movement known as objectivism.
The basic premise of objectivism is that if everyone does what is best for themselves, everyone will be taken care of. She wrote against the crimes altruism, and felt that only the individual could properly care for the individual.

Or in other words, she penned a halfwit knee-jerk reaction to Marx's already century old philosophies, which was only embraced by the western world because they found communism so loathesome that they would love anyone or anything that opposed it. "The enemy of my enemy," and all that.
For real fun, look up Tolstoy's opinions on Nietzsche. He was pretty much right on the money.
