Today I was watching a charming episode of 'Wife Swap' with my parents (Yes, I understand that show is trash, but it's funny). This particular episode involved a right wing christian and a left wing conservative. Hi jinks ensue, grown men cry, the end. During the ending summary, the announcer said something about a "Christian Republican and a Christian Democrat" Then this dialogue ensues:
Me:"I think I found the problem"
Mom:"What?"
Me:"They're both Christian"
Mom:"WHAT!? I thought I raised you better than that! Do you know how that makes me feel?!"
Me:"What? I'm only a selfish atheist, why would I care?"
Mom:" I have lost all respect for you. You disgust me"(Exit stage hallway) I may have been mean, but it was meant in jest. I honestly thought she knew I was an atheist. She thinks I'm 'confused.' I'm pretty damn sure I don't believe in God. Should I just avoid the topic, or attempt to tell her what I believe? I would go with the latter, but she freaks out. It's not a big deal (we're not church-going) but it bugs me. Help?

Tell her to accept your beliefs. Even though you disagree with hers, you still accept them because she's your mom and you love her, and she needs to do the same.
