Larks are morning people. They are most alert in the day and go to bed early @ night. They get out of bed in the morning easily and are energized. Owls are night people. They are usually very tired in the mornings due to less sleep, and as the day goes on, their mood generally increases. At night they are comfortable & happiest.
There is a whole bunch of different characteristics for these two types of person. Although not everyone is an owl or a lark, most are "hummingbirds", who are somewhere in the middle of the spectrum; they can wake early if needed, but will stay up late if, say, they are at a party.
Only 1 in 10 people is a true morning "lark", and 2 in 10 a true night "owl". Extreme owls like the 2-in-10 ones often have sleep problems like insomnia and/or like to stay up past midnight most nights. They very are disinclined to go to bed early. This is definitely me. I found this all really interesting, how much these two simple sleep pattern personalities can govern your waking life, like when you feel most alert, when you are most productive, when you enjoy eating, working, having sex more, when your peak and lowest body temperature is, all that stuff.
