First of all, it's not "a few brigades" Obama would move out. It's all of them. And the only reason he would keep any there would be to protect Americans both in Iraq and in America. Second, even if it isn't all that different from Bush's plan, that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. Also, McCain wants to keep *all* the troops in Iraq, and if these are the two candidates to choose between, Obama is a better pick as far as Iraq is concerned. What part of this phrase "if al Qaeda attempts to build a base within Iraq, he will keep troops in Iraq or elsewhere in the region to carry out targeted strikes on al Qaeda" mentions that he will keep an amount of troops in Iraq which is less than we have now? No part of it functions as the escape clause which he can say that Al Qeada is still building bases (which they've done throughout post war Iraq) and so we can't remove troops yet. There are also more than two candidates to choose from.
What part of the phrase "Obama will have all of our combat brigades out of Iraq within 16 months" implies that he will leave as many troops in Iraq as there are now? I really, really doubt that Obama will keep almost 150,000 troops in there to bomb Al Queda. Post edited at 8:52 am on July 10, 2008 by gogreengeckos8D

No part of that phrase says it. I wasn't talking about that phrase I was talking about the one that acts as an exemptive clause for that phrase. He basically said "I'll take all the combat troops out of Iraq unless Al Qeada continues to do what they have been doing." and that isn't a statement thats worth shit.

Like I said before, he's not going to leave all the troops there, just a few to make sure that we don't have a retake of 9/11 or worse.

He doesn't say how many he will leave or not leave if Al Qeada continues to build bases. You are reading into it that he will only leave some. I believe that is what he wants people to read into it while not actually making a statement that says that.

I personally don't believe either Obama or McCain will make significant difference in the general strategy in Iraq. Obama being a little better. On the Iran issue I believe Obama might be slightly better. Most of the differences in rhetoric will mean nothing when Obama or McCain becomes president. One economics there will be a more significant difference but still not much. On the economy McCain comes out a bit ahead. Pro free trade and free market, the only problem is he might move too close to corporate welfare, which destroys the benefits of the free market and creates more problems for the free market than they help. Obama wants to employ much more regulation that will probably be more detrimental because most regulations end up doing more damage than good. For example ethanol corn subsidies anyone, Obama is a huge fan of that, McCain wants to get rid of them. I like that McCain will probably free up America's protectionist trade policies and reducing subsidies. On civil liberties I doubt Obama will want to give up the executive powers in surveillance and detaining enemy combatants once he is the president. The biggest difference in a McCain versus Obama presidency will be replacing Supreme Court Judges, on that I trust neither, I trust Justice Kennedy as generally being a good balance for the court, both will throw the court too far off center. McCain likes the far right justices, Obama likes the far left and neither like more centrist judges.

1. The art of sarcasm is lost on you people, as evidenced by some of these posts. 2. Please stop using the phrase 'lesser of two evils' and realize that there are more than 2 candidates. 3. Barack Obama will not change much at all. John McCain won't improve things either, but at least his title of 'conservative' merits that (even though I'm sure most actual conservatives - AKA plenty of libertarians - don't agree with that title). 4. I think I hate most things involved with US politics, probably because of the two party system and lack of third party awareness.
