So... I tried my commute out today to see what it would be like.  I'll need a 15 minute bike ride, a 1 hour train, then another 1 hour train, and then a 10 minute walk once I make it to campus.

And you know?  It wasn't so horrible.  The trains are pretty comfy, and I'll definitely be able to do some work on them... much better than driving and not being able to do anything.  And, well, it will DEFINITELY save me money in the long run, even though it's over $150 per month... (though I may reduce this and take a longer commute).

Hopefully after a week of this, I'll still feel the same!

Anyone have any suggestions or advice for commuters?

As long as you think you can do it continuously thats all that matters. Though I would worry about missing the train.

Well, the second train comes every 15 minutes.  And the first one is really close to my house, so it shouldn't be a problem :).  Lol, but yeah, no missing trains, that would be bad :P.

good you found something that works for you, as far as advice for commuters, Just bring stuff to do like reading, listening to music, or if available, laptop. Or do some work that needs to get done, for school.
and maybe meet some new people?

Yeah, I think that too... but relatively speaking, it's much cheaper than a dorm or living somewhere else. I'll move up there after first year.

keep in mind that if you wanted to do anything extracurricular like going to parties or anything, you live more than two hours away so you wouldn't be able to go unless you spent the night somewhere

I am being completely honest when I say that I have NO interest in any kind of parties.  Maybe going out with friends for a small snack or something, but not really interested in more than that.  In terms of sports, I can't play because of back pains, and I don't see any plans of them becoming better.

And when it comes down to it... 13000 dollars for a dorm is a lot :(.  I'd love to live in a dorm, would be much easier, but the expense isn't worth it.

Dorms are always grossly overpriced, and disgustingly under-maintained. I can understand why you are wary of them.

But also keep in mind that it WILL be an issue at some point or another. There's just no way you can live more than two hours away from you school and be flexible.

I know you probably don't care but you are going to be missing out on so much. Spontaneous goings out when someone just wanders into your room and asks whether you want to go into town and get food/watch a movie/go for a walk. The randomness of dorms are so much fun. Random study sessions, people coming to knock on our door and sit just to get to know you. Random weird happenings and loads of people to share it with. I couldn't imagine Uni life without my first year in halls.

No, I do care.  But it's nice, I don't live with my parents now, and I do go out randomly with my sister and roommate to go get food or something (I hate movies).

But simply put... if I lived on campus, I would have to commute 2 hours back every weekend because I have a job that I HAVE to keep.  This would probably push me towards getting a car (Another expense).

Add 30000 dollars of tuition with 13000 dollar dorm fee, a car, books, and my own personal items...  I currently get PAID where I live as well... So I feel like I can't go to a dorm, it's too much.... :(.

Oh I know, it'll definitely take away some of my life.  Not to mention that I'll still keep jobs for the weekend, and I'm still seeing if I can keep some of the days on my weekday job, but I'm not sure yet... My oldest sister told me to leave some time for myself, but then again, I'm a bit different...

The guilt of spending money and asking for money from my father is something that I can't get rid of.  The reason I almost risked missing the chance at this school was because of money issues, and it's the reason I took a year off.  By taking a year off, I almost lost my chance entirely, to a school I may not have made it back in to.  I mean, I even lied and said we didn't have a grad trip (basically in the final year, you can go on a trip somewhere), so that he didn't have to spend the money.  I suppose it's this mentality that pushes me through it, even knowing that there are some days where I'll just think it's not worth it :(.
