really? so if you get on the motorway for a 100 mile trip @ 90 miles an hour, you save basically no time over 55?

It's already like that.

There are people going 70 on a highway with a 70 mph speed limit, and others going 80-90.

There will be less damage if everyone goes 15 mph slower. Not as many fatal accidents.

What on Earth makes you think that if they lower the speed limit, everyone is going to automatically drive that speed?  Sure doesn't work like that now; If they lower the legal speed limit then people who obey the law will be going even slower than they are right now.  The people who drive 70-80 right now will still be going 70-80.

No they will not. They'll get huge fucking tickets. I'm not kidding. On my way to Gainesville, I've seen at least 20 people pulled over by state troopers. The fine grows exponentially the higher over the speed limit you go. In Florida, you can get a speeding ticket on a highway for going over 10 mph. The speed limit on most highways is 70, so people usually go 80 mph max. Those that go over always get busted. Always. These same people go 65-70 on 55 mph roads. They never go 20 mph + over the limit. They know the fine is huge, and they will get caught.

You have to take into account all the times you'll get pulled over doing 90. So yeah, time is about the same.

The speed limit is 65...and the majority drive 70-90 on the freeways anyways. I can't see anyone driving 55.

yet most of the time they get away with it, and if they get a fine, they usually just keep on speeding. and actually it depends on the road, if the limit is artificially lowered to 50 or 55 on a major highway, people stay at 80. case in point, garden state parkway. it has the same terrible conditions calikevin talked about

That's not how it works around here. I've never seen anyone go over 70 on US1, a major highway that doesn't go above 55 mph (at least in my county). Even speeders have their limits.

You guys make it sound like people are going to go 80 regardless of the speed limit, which is absolutely untrue. People can take only so many tickets before they get tired of overpaying for insurance and shit. lol

In Florida, you can't escape them. I see them every time I get on the highway. hahah

I guess it's different in jersey.

US 1, most people go 70-75 here in the nicely paved areas in light traffic or during rush hours

But on the turnpike and GSP, whenever it's lowered, people just keep on going.

I go a maximum of 75 on 55mph highways, unless traffic around me is moving faster.  On the freeways where the speed limit is 65, I go between 75-85.  People who are used to driving these speeds will not slow down for fear of a ticket; if that was the case, no one would speed as it is right now.

I've only ever gotten one ticket in all my speeding days, and that was because I was entering a town on the ighway where the limit drops to 45, and I didn't reduce my speed fast enough.  I still beat the ticket, because the cop was off in the Nevada desert running.

No one around here dares go 20 mph over the speed limit.

Maybe it's different where you live, but in Florida cops litter the highway. Speeders get tickets multiple times if they don't get rid of their lead feet. Most of them don't even travel very far. They have no reason to be going so fast. I just don't see the point, you know?

Getting in a car crash at 85 mph is a lot more dangerous than at 55 mph. It is something I would never risk. Call me a pussy or whatever, but I read about fatal accidents in the news all the time (people driving way too fast and spin out of control), and I don't want that to be me. :)

i don't think my car can drive that slow unless i slightly apply the brakes.

that's just stupid

the fatality rate for a crash at 85 mph is much much higher than at 55
