I'm not too worried about the swine flu, it will probably only kill the elderly, infants and immunocompromised. Since I'm in none of those categories, all is well. :D

Read my post above. This flu is different because it is indiscriminate. It targets the young and healthy just as much as the elderly and compromised.

Largely because it's a new virus to which nobody has built up an immunity. In all other ways, it's behaving exactly as a regular, seasonal flu. There have been no deaths so far in countries with improved health care and even health officials are now saying that it's looking significantly less dangerous than they'd originally feared. The worst seems to be over in Mexico, and it doesn't look to be getting more deadly in the rest of the world, simply spreading somewhat quickly, just as a regular, seasonal flu would.

The sky is not yet falling. I'm not saying that people should just relax and not care, but I am saying that this isn't cause to be as alarmed as people are being. All of the healthy young people who had this flu in the United States recovered quickly and with minimal medical intervention, and it's more than possible that a large chunk of people in Mexico did the same thing, only we didn't hear about it because they didn't report their flu to the WHO because nobody knew it was going to be the Next Big News Story.

I always have hand sanitizer on me, even before all this swine flu.

I bought this cool Garfield one yesterday.

I have always been conscious of being clean, I always wash my hands with soap before I eat and the normal hygiene we should follow but most people don't.

Hope it doesn't get over here, if not we are screwed.

All of this is true, but the WHO have warned that although the worse does seem to be over for now the virus will more than likely come back in a 2nd wave in the winter in a more virulent and transmissable form, which is when younger healthy people may be at risk of cytoplastic storms which was a mjor killer in 1918. Then it will be the younger and healthier with strong immune systems that are MORE at risk than the rest of the population

There's as much chance of it mutating and returning stronger in winter than there is any other virus.

I got from the WHO a slightly higher chance.

Then we can worry about it in the winter, though I doubt we'll really have to. By that point, a vaccine will either be developed and available or on its way to being developed and available. The sky still isn't falling and there really isn't any use wringing our hands and assuming that the worst-case scenario will be the one that takes place.

Everything I've read has suggested that this is most likely going to turn out to be another version of the seasonal flu--a few aches and pains, fevers and chills, but you're back to work in a couple of days and just fine. When people do start dying because of cytokine storms, and start dying in high numbers because of cytokine storms, then it will be time to worry. Right now, just wash your hands, avoid people who have the flu, no need to get all panicky and start weeping about the end of the world just yet.

I've been warped by the media into thinking that it is more serious than the common cold was during the two world wars. Is that a bad symptom?

Get over it, I say. Panic, panic, panic. 13000 people have died from the normal flu, this year, compared to the one in the us. Compare that!

I have also read they are going to spend so much time developing a vaccine for swine flu though that there isn't going to be enough batches of the seasonal flu vaccine ready so people are going to die either way.

And if they don't die of seasonal flu, they'll die of AIDS; if they don't die of AIDS, they'll die of whooping cough; if they don't die of whooping cough, they'll die of tuberculosis.

People die of diseases. It happens every day. Adding a new one into the mix isn't a reason to get panicky; if you really need to panic, panic over the fact that we haven't invented immortality yet.

Well thats just silly as AIDS is not as transmissable as flu, because its transfered through blood and semen etc rather than coughs sneezes, and touching hard surfaces. And TB is a bacterial disease, which there has been a vaccine around for years, and is pretty much wiped out over here.

So its a big deal at least in the UK

Except it's not, not any more than the seasonal flu, and I'll thank you to show recent evidence that says otherwise.
