Could be a good thing?

Hello Everyone! I just wanted everyone's opinion on Greek Life on campus, in general. Do you like it? Do you think that sororities and fraternities are dumb? What are your opinions? I was in a local sorority for three years, I like some parts of it, but disliked all of the drama that entailed it...but, it was a rewarding experience. Let me know your opinions! Thanks!

If you have the extra money and time to put into the greek system, by all means do so. If you don't, well just focus on the real reason that you are suppose to go to college--to get an education. High school was the time to make friends. College is about investing in your future. If you feel that this will help you market or network yourself--do it.

I never joined one. I didn't like the idea of paying for friends... The rush week stuff always drove me crazy too. My cousin used to go to the frat parties quite a bit and ended up in the hospital after getting hit over the head with a beer bottle... Its just really not my kinda people or organization. I'd rather join free clubs with people who aren't so interested in drinking and partying.

i wouldnt say its like paying for friends.

id say u pay for the opportunity to do crazy things in college and have the chance to make good friends.

i still keep in contact with people i met in greek life even though im out of it now.

i transferred schools and miss them a lot.

in fact i "speak" to them on a regular basis. im too busy to IM them or call them so i use this tool on http://www.campusstew.com (campus stew)

its basically like a yahoo group page but the private forum is more user friendly and it keeps track of our birthdays.

Woah, those things (sororities, fraternities etc) sound like pure evil judging on what I've read about them and what i've seen in movies.  Plus, they've got some weird New-Age type ceremonies and whats with all the Greekness??

I just don't understand why anyone would want to join them

I didn't join till my Junior Year--I regret not doing it earlier.  College has been so much better since I made the decision.

It's not for everyone--especially really weird people--but there's no harm in going out for Rush Week and getting to know the different organizations on campus.

People who say that they don't understand why people join these things--that's fine.  You probably don't understand advanced molecular biology either.  But rest assured, it's probably a big part of some people's lives and is probably even benefitting a few.

Seems like a horrible commitment.  I am not going to give rows of blow jobs, or give myself alcohol poisoning just so that I can be friends with pretty people who have no respect for anything they do.  I'm perfectly happy with the friends that I do have without the worry of pledging.

i think it really depends on the size of your campus.. i go to a pretty big school (40,000) and greek life is the stereotypical valley girls and sex-hungry guys.. but i visit my friends at smaller schools and theyre greek and seem a lot more down to earth.

i think all of em have a level of drama.  and it depends which soror/frat youre in of course

i almost pledged but i ended up goin with the
"id rather pay for beer than friends!" thing

I've thought about it, but since this is my freshmen year and have no clue about any of the soroities at my school, I think I will wait til my Sophomore year to decide to or not.  Right now, I just want to focus on school life and adjustment.

i never thought about becoming a greek all through high school because of the reputation it has but somehow i still got sucked into it in college. i'm now a sister for Kappa Phi Lambda and i honestly think it has been an experience that has made me a stonger person. for my sorority, the typical sorority behavior just doesn't happen. we believe in eternal sisterhood and like to have a fun time together so i guess i don't mind greek life when it doesn't involve doing things i don't feel comfortable doing.

I don't understand much about Greek organizations, since I'm not in college until next year and I've really only seen stuff about them on TV and stuff. My friends have gone to frat parties before and they just seem like a bunch of drinking. Do all Greek organizations drink and party a lot? I don't think I would like that...

What else do they really... do?

I looked into it and asked a couple people that either was in one or knew a lot about them. I decided it wasn't for me at all.  They give you time to do some research before you actually join, and not to mention they let you look at all of them beforehand.  It just all depends on you and your personality.
