What is a zip/rar file & how do I open it?

A short & simple answer would be much appreciated since I'm not very technical.

If it is absolutely necessary to have a long, complicated process to be explained to me I will offer points. But I'd rather not.

So help, please

Just download winrar, it'll let you extract files from the rar/zip file.
(It's not hard, once you download winrar you just right click and choose 'extract')

Go to download.com

Download winRAR.

Then when you download a .rar file, it will open it in winRAR, then you can extract it to a specific file from there.

Download 7-Zip:  http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
Install
Go to file through My Computer (or any basic Windows way of opening folder)
Right Click
Extract Files...; or Extract here

They are compresses files, saves space, and can pack multiple files and folders together.

.rar/.zip files are both compression formats. They aren't the only ones either.
Basically they keep a lot of files compressed into a single smaller file.

You use programs such as Winrar (stated earlier) to 'extract' files from them. There are others, but Winrar seems to work the best for me and it's free.

If you're interested, here's more about WinRAR and data compression.
