I'm curious as to whether or not most people think their college GPA is actually going to have any effect on them whatsoever in terms of getting started in their career. My point of view has always been that for the majority of jobs, the important things are simply having your degree and being the right sort of person with the right sort of experiences. The number attached to your diploma is really just there to get you into graduate school, if you are so inclined, or for your own personal benefit.

What do people think their college GPAs are going to do for them once they graduate?

Uh it can help you get into a better grad school or transfer into a better school

And if your GPA gets low you'll get kicked out of school

what you're saying is the same as, "How does your HS GPA affect what job you'll get?" Well it doesn't directly, a diploma is a diploma, but you don't want to flunk out of HS and you want to have grades to get you into a better college.

Yeah, in this economy it doesn't hurt to have a bad GPA if you want a good job

but I think it's mainly for grad school, law school, med school, etc. it also can earn you scholarships and win awards, honor roll, shit like that

Whether or not the GPA matters when it comes to getting a job, I'd like to have a high, impressive GPA even if I'm the only one who cares about it. It will make me feel better about myeslf.

Besides getting into grad school, that's the only reason I think I would care about it, either. All my friends in college now are worried they won't be able to get a job without some kind of high GPA, like a 3.5. Probably they should be more worried about how their GPA makes them feel than that.

So busting my ass to get a high GPA actually does not matter when it all comes down to it?

I have never been under the impression that the GPA is just one of many other factors that could lead you to getting the job you want out of an undergraduate degree. Honestly, I believe it would be more helpful in most situations to develop a broad record of experiences with a good GPA than to focus intensely on just getting a very high GPA. Unless, of course, you intend to work in an academic field. Many fields you will find, however, have very little to do with doing the sort of work you are graded on in school.

this completely depends on what career you want. My best friend is in the film industry as an editor, he went to USC film school (top 5 film schools) and they didn't care what grades he had, thats all about getting your foot in the door. Other jobs, it is gonna matter and they will check to see how you did.

It doesn't really effect any outcome. What effects the outcome is the Degree Program, and the grades you've recieved in core classes. The higher the grade, the better of you'll be. But what matters most in today's day and age is who you know.

Some companies actually put a minimum GPA as a criteria for screening their potential candidates. So having a semi-good GPA can only benefit you. See more results at http://www.higheredspace.com/index.php/answers

some employers actually put a GPA requirement on the job description, it shouldn't affect THAT much but it would be better if you are not on the lower end of the totum. www.HigherEdSpace.com

I'm sure that something like cum laudee, magna, or summa looks pretty impressive. But nobody is really going to give a damn about a .01 or .1 difference in reality.
