It is absolutely obnoxious but the best way to get anything legitimately done, client side, over the web. It's had it's rep tarnished because it spend years being an annoying gimmick and only now is coming into its own. Either way I've never legitimately learned to code in it, since I largely avoid web programming and only just now am learning to do some server side scripts.

It is a web scripting "language" that is used on the client-side of web sites. It cannot write to or read from a file, but it is particularly useful in making dynamic webpages where computations and data management are needed on the client side. Gmail does use javascript quite a bit. Javascript is used in a technology called "ajax" which allows you to reload/load certain parts of a webpage without reloading the wHOLE thing.

As said, it is a client side scripting language, it runs in the browser, and is generally used to tweak HTML or perform other such actions in web pages.
A simple example of its use could be checking the contents of form fields on a website
Javascript is best done with the assistance of libraries like jQuery, makes so many things so much easier.
