I will be walking down the hall or in the school cafeteria, and I'll see tons of people whom I don't know, have never talked to, and don't know their names. Then I wonder if, if I got to know any of them, maybe we'd have a lot in common and they'd end up my best friends? But I obviously never talk to anyone I don't know because that's considered pretty weird around here..

Or, there will be cliques and groups like "preps" and "popular crew" and you'll think, if they didn't go to the same school and have the unwritten boundaries between groups, you could be really good friends with them too?

When I was in public school, I had a pretty accurate idea of who everyone was.  Out of the 300 people in my grade, I knew probably around 275-280.  And I never had any interest in becoming friends with a majority of them.
