So my doctor and I think I may have a thyroid problem, but because I dont have medical insurance he is putting off the bloodwork till I get my check from work...in the meantime he put me on Ativan, but I read that it is for Anxiety, Bi-Polar and Depression...

Does anyone else take Ativan or know about its treating of Thyroid problems?

PM if you would like...thanks!

I know someone that takes ativan, but they take it as a seizure medication.

All medications can have different functions.  A depression pill in low doses can deal with anxiety.  My doctor didn't want to put me on a medication that would help my motor tics because the medication is also given to people to lower their blood pressure (Which I don't need).

If you want, you can look into lorazepam (that should be the generic name for ativan).  You may find that thyroid problems may show up.  If not, it may be something that deals with some form of imbalance, and the direct correlation between thyroid and ativan won't show up.

I have not heard of it being used for that, but ask your doctor.

Ah, the wonders of the American health care system!

And, no, sorry, I don't have any experience with it. But I did look it up, and it's used to treat anxiety and insomnia... Not sure what that has to do with thyroid problems, but you can read more here:

What your doctor might be doing is giving you a medication that will help with the side effects you may be feeling from a thyroid problem.

Basically, some of the things that your thyroid may ~cause~ might be able to be treated by ativan.  He may have just given it to you to make you feel better until they could go through with the tests.  So while it may not actually treat a thyroid problem, he probably only gave it to deal with other problems you may be experiencing?

That's what it might be.
