Hopefully if you are an intellectual, you know the significance of the formula E=mc^2 , Einstein's way of saying that for every particle of mass you have, it has the potential to convert to a certain amount of energy. My question to you; why is C the speed of light? Was it just that the number 299,792,458 meters per second coincidentally just works in the equation? or are there components of the speed of light which have something to do with the energy in matter?

Light is the only known... thing... that exhibits both the mass properties of a particle, and the wave properties of energy. In many ways, light can be viewed as a 'bridge' between matter and energy.
