As i have limited axperience of XBOX live i can only use the PSN to explain my point however, judging by microsofts track record i would be astounded if it was any different.
If we go back a year or so to the launch of the Ps3 and its flagship online game RFOM, what we see is a value for money package with excellent online support. sure there were a few updates but not to fix bugs but rather to omprove the quality of the online interface. i, like most people i assume, took this as a sign of things to come, and although extra maps were made available the initial package consisted of a helthy number of maps and gamemodes into which people could get their teeth.
It seems however i was mistaken, if we consider the vast range of games which have been released over the last year, what we actually see is a reversal of this trend. most games have poor online support and the majority launch with some sort of bugg which needs an update to fix it.....

In addition to this laclustre attitude twards console games it appears we are now slowly but surely being exposed to stealth charges in one way or another.
This i think is the philosophy behind home, sure it was free, how could antbody have missed it, but is it really free? what exactly do you get for nothing. not a great deal from my limited experience, just the basic package to get the youngsters interested and then whamo, you want new gear for your avatar, new furniture for your clubnouse 'oooh, itll cost yer mate'
as already mentioned, RFOM shipped with multiple gamemodes, (fully customisable) and a healthy number of maps to keep folk going for months n months. I beleive R2 has limited gamemodes and would be interested to hear how many maps shipped with the title at launch.
Killzone 2 will ship with a whopping 3 gamemodes, i expect more to be available for download on the PSN but at what price.

Im all for extra content but thats exactly what it should be 'extra' games should ship with enough maps and gamemodes to keep all but the most hardcore fans happy and interested for a long time and the fact that we are now able to download extras to console should not be seen as a reason for publishers to release games with limited content so they can charge extra for people to complete the package at a later date.
it just feels a little like we are being held to ransome a little. the only games of any note which seem to run flawlessley are sony exclusives and it is these titles which seem most guilty of my accusations.
time will tell i suppose but when i purchase a game i do rather expect not to have to pay more just to get what i feel should have been included from the beggining.

I used to play Xbox live when I for a period of time owned an Xbox.

I can say this.

I prefer Playstation Network.

It honestly is good.

On the money part.

You have to spend money to get certain clothing and furniture but there is nothing really wrong with that.

I used to spend alot of money in Second Life.

Now the biggest problem I have with home is the fact we cannot change the color of the clothing.

im referring to other games too. Call of Duty wasn't that bad, it shipped with plenty of game modes, and although i assume they will put extra content that you can get, for a price are just infact "extra" content. Call of duty ships with plenty of game modes and maps to keep the standerd gamer happy for quite a while.

playstation home is a great example. also games such as brothers in arms, far cry. Killzone 2 sounds like it will be a new contender.

Home had made the purchasing optional extras part clear from the start. There's absolutely no motive whatsoever to develop and host a virtual world for nothing, especially on a console which has struggled to break even let alone run a profit.

The fact is, additional content for console games is all developed by those that made the games - ie, wages were paid, resources were powered, etc... they can't release that for nothing. There's no indy modification scene for console games, so there's no free extras.

You're faced with two decisions when it comes to DLC for consoles.

extreme in-game advertising(like in Home) or paying for it. Third party developers are really the worst when it comes to this.

I hate that, within like a month of games coming out there's new content. It makes you wonder if they were planning to fuck us all over from the start.
