smoking weed is almost entirely a social obligation to me for the last year or so. Last january, I actually started smoking weed more times a day than was enjoyable just to keep my tolerance up so I could smoke with people when I felt obligated to without getting fucked up. Now I only smoke a few times a week, and I don't know which is better. In the social groups I'm in it can be really offensive to consistently turn someone's weed down, but if I accepted every time I would seriously never be sober. So there is coolness tied pretty strongly to weed for me, but not in an I-can-smoke-so-much-more kind of way.
