AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy are popular ones. There are also other programs that let you have free trials that you can just install over and over, like Windows Live OneCare.

I got AVG. then got a virus. AVG remained silent. it didn't do a thing. I had to uninstall it and then installed kaspersky. It's free for only 30 days though. A lot better than AVG though

Well.. free anti virus.. well are eggie.. but some free ones are AVG
Avast Free Spyware Programs Ad-Aware
Spybot search and destroy i have both those anti spyware programs and they are good, the browser immunization is very good in spybot and stops practically all spyware getting into my computer. Spybot search and destroy the tea timer can clash with some anti viruses, i think it could clash with Avast so make sure you make the tea timer not active.
