The Sooby, far superior to the Evo
Couldnt be more wrong.
It depends on what you want to do with it.
I have owned 2 subarus, so Im not going to lie to you here. One was a fully built usdm ej205 (wiseco pistons, race bearings, pauter rods, etc), lots of head work, stage 2 cams, upgraded valves/retainers, etc.. JDM sti drivetrain swap as well as a Spec C twin scroll vf37 and supporting shit. Also a 2008 sti that is currently waiting until spring for a Element Tuning gt52 and supporting mods.
The subaru is great. Bullet proof tranny, great drivetrain and the DCCD is fun. Good choice on 05 (stay away from 04, 5x100 vs 5x114.3, 04s have weaker wheel bearings, engine mounts, smaller wheels, etc).
The USDM subaru ej257 (sti motor) is solid but the pistons are weak and the rings can realistically only hold about 440whp MAX and that is with a wet dream of a tune, lots of water meth and many supporting mods. After that you are going to need to at least rehone the block and get some forged pistons in there.
The evo comes with the 4g63t (motor), which also came on the eagle talon, old mitsu eclipse, mitsu galant vr4 as well as the mitsu 3000gt. It is an iron block and with proper headwork (cams, some porting and upgraded spings, etc) can hold 800whp... The evo WILL outhandle the sti as well, not by much, but a smidge.
So if you are looking for more than 400whp (about 515hp by manufactures specs) then the evo is the only reasonable choice. You can pick up a full exhaust, gt30r then drop in some cams with a solid tune and be making 450whp and running low 11s. Suby is going to need a goodd bit more work but I do still prefer them to the evos.
Oh and both > the mazdaspeed 3. I went was on my 3rd motor and 2nd turbo before i got rid of it. Hella fun but holy headache
