I think there's a good chance of civilization as we know it completely collapsing within our lifetime. What is going on now is tied to it, but not strictly the cause. I don't foresee all of the very dangerous problems that will be hitting us within a few decades being worked out. People often take the actual importance of oil for a nation for granted, but without it, say goodbye to agriculture, transportation, heating, electronics, and practically every other thing produced, it IS the LIFELINE of an economy, even "oil alternative energy sources" are dependent on oil to produce- I read somewhere that it takes 10 calories of fossil fuels to produce a single calorie of food. And even a %10-15 discrepancy between supply and demand of oil can strike a deathblow, I believe. And we are way too close to global oil-depletion to effectively implement an alternative to oil to keep our economy on its feet. As far as how worried I am, I don't tend to worry, but sure, I care about humans and don't want them to suffer.

Piejesu, that's very post-apocalyptic of you. Look a bit deeper, you'll realise the reason we use so much oil is because it's convenient. We can already get at it, all our equipment's already tailored towards it, and it leaves the surface materials (most importantly farmland) free for other things such as foodstocks. We can get around this, it's just human nature getting in the way. Hell, if I could guarantee a death of old age in comfort before the oil peak, I'd be hard pushed to decline the offer.

If there is no oil, and as a result people start dying off in mass famines, humanity WILL come out with a new source of energy. They just will. We're going to do anything possible to get by, and if it means massive government intervention and investing into the development of alternative sources of energy, we'll do it. I PERSONALLY am not that concerned with the economic situation... my father has a high-responsibility position in an engineering firm that he's worked at for over thirty years, and my mother works in a public school system. The chances of them losing their jobs at this point is slim. Looking at the world economy, however, I can definitely see things lining up to drastically change the way we live within the next few years. All it's going to take is one really fucked up event to send everyone into panic, and shit is gonna get fucked up. Thinking long term as well, I'm going to be in school for at least two more years. At that point I'm going to go out and try and earn money any way I can; the life of a musician is not one of financial stability. I've already accepted this, but if anything it's almost comforting to know that even though I may be poor in the future, everyone else will be too.

I fear how big government will end up being after the end of this. Both bailouts were originally shot down, but that didn't stop them from being tried again or put into effect anyway. The government does whatever it wants, it seems.

I changed my mind. I'm not so worried about it. I'm hopeful. But I don't know if I should be. I'm also more disappointed than worried. I knew this day would come.

I'm extremely worried. Last month we were in range of having a global depression, and things have just gotten worse.
