Without religion, there would be even nuttier people. They'd start more cults for their own individual beliefs, then in a religion itself.

Considering the financial crisis and everything, a piece of fairytale always makes those happier who wish to accept it.

It depends on how a society views and uses it.

"false moral values"

I'm curious as to what you think those are.

Last time I checked "love your neighbor as yourself" and "Don't kill other people" were pretty good morals.

"Most of them involve some sort of faith which is just about the greatest destructive force of humankind."

Why?

How about Matthew 5:27-28:

"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

This is Jesus telling humanity that they will be convicted of thoughtcrime for having a perfectly natural reaction. I know people who, based off of this verse, suffer mentally because they find themselves sexually attracted to people they are not in a relationship with. It's degrading and retarded.

It's no more harmful or beneficial to society than any other abstract idea, like socialism or patriotism. With all of these, it's how it is put into practice that makes all the difference.

Going by historical example, I think that religion tends to be good for society. Examples: the Caliphate from 600-1000 AD, Islam in the Ottoman Empire 1500-1700, Al-Andalus from 800-1100. Catholicism after the Counter-Reformation.

And there are examples of when religion is bad for society: Taiping China, Al-Andalus after 1100, North Africa after 1100, early second millennium Catholicism, the Byzantine Empire in some periods. Also, Reformation-era Europe.

Thirdly, there are also examples of non-religious states where lack of religion could be considered negative: Communist Albania, the Soviet Union, Communist China, other communist states. Also post-Revolution France, for a few years at least.

I think the best states have been ones with the separation of church and state. Religion can be good for society, but not when the two are completely intertwined.

Neutral.

It's not the religion that decides benefit or hindrance to society. It's how the religion is practiced by its followers

uhmm that's my question

throughout history do you think how people have acted BECAUSE OF RELIGION has done more harm than good

Religion is responsible for society. Our greatest advances in technology and civilisation have been inspired by a diety or multiple dieties. Good or a bad thing.. I can't really judge or tell.

No.

I think most people are too stupid to comprehend what their own religion teaches, and as a result they muddle things up so badly that religion ends up being an excuse for wrong-doing and immorality rather than what it was originally intended to be.
