I was home from college for Thanksgiving break. I recently stopped seeing my counselor. I went to the counseling center two years ago. Earlier this fall I had to go to the clinic for intestinal problems. I am constantly stressed and upset and this actually contributed to my stomach ulcer. The doctor suggested I go see the counselor again. I went, but it didn't help. I need to see an actual psychiatrist.

My mom was stressing out as usual over the holiday so I didn't want to ask her to make me an appointment before. Then my older brother was home this weekend so I didn't want to be a "downer" and start talking about my mental issues. I wanted to talk to my mom today, but my dad was around all day. My dad's pretty tough on me. He's very critical and doesn't acknowledge this is actually my break. He thinks I'm wasting time if I'm not out working and is constantly after me. He also thinks I'm a hypochondriac so I don't talk with him about my depression. So in other words, I put off the appointment.

My mom was going to make an appointment, but then made the excuse "well I don't know who to call and ask for to make an appointment." And then she just suggested the college counseling center. I looked at my clinic's website and believe I would need the "Behavioral Health Psychiatry" department. Is this who I would need an appointment for depression/social anxiety disorder?

I really shouldn't wait to have this appointment made. My intestinal problems are flaring up as I speak. It's nearly 1:30 here and I'm avoiding going to bed because I don't want to face the day. I have to wake up at 6:00 too. Would it be weird if I called my mom, gave her my class schedule, said I was having intestinal problems again, and that I needed an appointment with the Behavioral Health Psychiatry department? I am 21 and could make my own appointment; but I'm still under my parent's insurance. I'd get one myself; but I honestly can't pay for therapy along with my college tuition.

Not weird at all...do it. And a pyschologist is better than a psychiatrist - psychiatrists just prescribe drugs and refer you to a pyschologist. You suffer what I do and you need medication and regular counselling...you will get through it babe. Just get on top of it straight away, your not alone
