i STILL pick my hair, my mom doesn't believe that I have a problem, and says I do it for attention. I don't even realize I'm doing it sometimes, but then, sometimes,  I do. There are hairs on my head that are too thick, too curly, that just NEED to be GONE. She doesn't get it. I've also begun to pull out pubic hairs :( is there anything i can do??

ouch....thats gotta hurt! I think you need to go see someone. Or if you really are against that suggestion, try occupying your time with something else. Drawing...picking at something else but dont pick at your hair or your skin!

I thought I was the only person that did that.

Only I don't pick pubic hairs... since I shave it off.

But like, I pick out hair on my head randomly, and don't even realize it sometimes.

Weird.... but I have OCD like really bad...

There is  no need for sarcasm. She has most likely tried to stop but couldnt which Is why she's asking us for HELPFUL suggestions. Be kind and if you actually do reply to one of these kind of topics, be helpful. Dont be sarcastic because its really not neccessary.

I usually shave, too, but sometimes I just keep it trimmed. Shaving can be time consuming and I sometimes cut myself so yeah. But when I pull them out, I REALLY don't think about it. but I'm usually aware of picking through my head.

it sucks so much!

Trichotillomania is tough to treat.

An old friend of mine used to have it pretty bad. She got through most of it with professional help. You might want to read up on it.

It definitely is a mental thing that needs to be controlled. I am not sure what causes it exactly (I'm thinking anxiety). but if you know your mom won't believe you, talk to your guidance counselor or school nurse about it. Or even a teacher if anything. It really is more serious than your mom realizes, and she's right, it is in need of attention- medical attention. Its your body telling you it's needs help and badly.

Are you on any medication? My nephew has the same problem. Often times, when he's starting a new medication, or an existing one wears off, he'll start to pick things like his lip. When I try to tell him that he's doing it, he won't believe me, and then he's back at it a few minutes later.

Now, if that's not the problem... it could very well be from too much stress. Perhaps a constructive outlet would help. Maybe taking something up that you enjoy doing, or enjoyed at one time that appeals to you now. Reading or going for a walk.

Some people in this thread have offered a few ideas as-far-as a mental illness goes. Certainly reading up on it can help, but even someone without that particular problem will find a few similarities. I would suggest going to see a family doctor or a school counselor. They will point you in the right direction, whether it's medication or a counselor.
