I had the same kind of thing. A girl asked me for help online, so I wrote out this huge and *helpful* response, and she'd say things like "yeah". Or "thanks". But she always prompted me!

If I were you, don't go out of your way. It's a communication issue, and you can condition him into responding better by not going out of your way to chat/respond/whatever.
