recently, after we got our new modem installed to replace the old one (we switched our phone to comcast from verizon), our internet started having problems

sometimes it cuts in and out

other times it just stays off

but sometimes it appears as though it IS connected (the networking icon in the lower right) but refuses to connect saying stuff like "invalid AIM server address" when i try to get on aim and "firefox can't find the server"

and sometimes this lasts for awhile then itll go back to cutting in and out

the router lights appear normal and there's no trouble connecting when directly plugged into the modem

the comcast guy came and tested everything and said it was fine, do we need a new router or is there something else going on, because this is extremely frustrating

Had the same problem. I had to put a magnet on the modem, smash it with a hammer, then piece back together.

Switch your ethernet and internet cords. Switch the wires and see if they'll work. I know, I had the same problem and same symptoms. I bought a new modem, called tech support and they told me it was fine. But then a buddy told me to switch up the cords into different ports and it worked and never happened again.

Edit: It is a process of trial and error, but if that doesn't work it may very well be the router.

Double check the cords. However, I doubt thats it.

Insist that they test the line, come in and see the problem, and if need be, replace the line entirely.

There are so many things it could, from static on the line, to attenuation, a repeater that got taken off, etc.

They always say its fine, when its their fault. I'd probably scream at their cust service for awhile, until they actually do something to fix it. Its more than likely an ISP issue.

Did he check it at the corner, or at the house?

Are other devices in the house having connection problems, or only you?

Oh, I was gonna have you check that.

When he came out did he set your modem to send reports? They can make the modem send reports on activity every ten or fifteen minutes or so incase whatever is happening doesn't happen while he's around.

Did he offer you a new modem? It could be that.

If they try a new modem, and you still have the same problem, its definitely the line.

Oh, and I was at my friends when they were having a similar problem (they wanted me to take a look at their computer, make sure it wasnt their computer) and Comcast sent a TV guy. He tested the line, and it came out fine, but when it still didnt work, he admitted that he would need to send another request in to get a guy out to test the internet connection. Not sure if that means anything to you or not.
