I sparred 2 guys last night. They were both the weight class above me.They were both really tall and so had long arms. One had been doing boxing for quite a long time and the other was pretty new to the club but had previous experience. I would be one of the newer guys.
So I got in the ring to fight the more experienced guy, and straight away he threw 4 or 5 fast and hard punches. Although none of them hit me in the face it shocked me because I hadn't fought like that. The moment he got in the ring it was straight into fast paced stuff, and I hadn't fought anyone taller than me and with exceptionally long arms not to mention I'm unfit after Christmas. So I ended up ducking down a bit, and punching with out looking.
The other guy I did better against, because we were alternating against each other, but even though I was dogged tired in about my 3rd round. I was able to get him a lot of times in the face, more times than he got me.
But I didn't do well and couldn't understand why. I just wasn't....able to. The coach was telling me my guard was shit, and I'm ducking down.
On Monday I had an excellent first round against a guy 2 weight classes above me who had been boxing for 6 years and I dealt him a killer jab that made him have to stop.
Charlie, the head coach, came over to me when I was taking a break from sparring and asked me how I was getting on, and I said to him 'I'm just not able to.' And he said it happens, I'm unfit and haven't boxed for a month. And my friend Neil said to me 'Ah it takes a while to get into it. I had a really bad few rounds too.'
The thing is, I saw an experienced boxer being told he had a shit guard and was punching without looking.
I'm afraid that this will turn into a bad run rather than a bad day, because I just don't understand why I wasn't able to do much.
