"The Giraffe" by M. Senesi
In my AP English class our teacher gave us a short story we have never seen and asked us to write an essay on the theme of the story.
We wrote one essay on Macbeth, one on a short story we had already went over and one on a new short story.
It was on "The Giraffe". I can't find its theme anywhere on the internet so I was wondering if any of you could find out for me, or tell me the theme if you have read it yourselves.

It's basically about a merchant comming into a quaint town in some small country with a giraffe to attract people. He dies while he is there, leave the giraffe to the town. The people want to kill it at first, but a group of young boys decide to take it as their own. They lead it through the town all day, it looks into people's windows, eats the plants in the town's centre, and people get pissed off at it. By night time it gets cold, and the giraffe needs shelter. There is no place big enough so the boys go with the only option they have - the church - because ti has a big enough roof. It is a tight fit but works. The giraffe stand there all night and when the boys wake up it had eaten all the flowers and candles inside the church. The people are furious ( the preist laughs to himself) and they decide to shoot the giraffe. The young boys runn out of town with it and try to feed it hay. The giraffe gives up and dies in front of them.

I'll tell you what I put if I get a few responses out of this.

i guess i can see it being about human decency and kindness and trying to bring out the good in something even if it doesn't work out

Thanks. Yeah I put something similiar I guess. I wrote about the character development and how the boys were trying to 'see through it' while the town didn't accept the giraffe they did, and even the church didn't really accept it. Sorry, it was a long final I can't put it into good enough words to describe what I wrote, it was honestly a blur.

/also the children demonstrate a perspective that isn't corrupted by the world, so they still try to find the good in something while the adults are all "LET'S KILL IT NOW"

Well, the major part of the story is suppose to symbolize Jesus, the giraffe is Jesus, the kids become his deciples, the priest becomes pontious pilot. The theme can be related to the story of Jesus, and the last quote in the story "Damn this town anyway, where giraffes can't live, because theres room only for the things that are already here" is very helpful to contribute to the theme because its saying that people don't like things that are different and criticize the ones that are.

Our IB English teacher told us that the giraffe represented imagination and child-like wonders. The adults in the story tries to take that away from the boys, and that was what happens when a person grows up. I think that was the fable's deeper meaning
