In order for this to actually occur, the loop must have a beginning - otherwise the matter forming the hat would come out of nowhere (which, in the bounds of space-time is considered an impossibility/breach of the law of conservation). To be within the bounds of universal law, it would have to began with, say, one's "future self" picking up said hat in the park and THEN going back in time. If this (or something similar) never happens, then the hat has never truly existed (and will never exist) as it has come from nowhere.
