It is more a cultural divide where I live; there is a relatively huge population of 'chavs.'

However, about 10 miles there is a fairly major town (90K residents) that is perhaps one of the most ethnically diverse urban populations in the UK outside of London. It is always in the news for race and hate crimes.

Weirdly enough, about 10 miles in the other direction there is a minor city (250K residents inc. suburbs) that is the most culturally diverse urban population any where in the UK and yet it is famous for it's tolerance of different cultures.

Though the second urban population has it's areas of poverty the first is by far the worse economically. In fact, the first is extremely economically poor when considering that south east England is the most wealthy region of the UK. That said, the second has one of the highest proportions of homelessness in the UK (even compared to the major [UK] cities) and yet, as I said, is very tolerant.

It is fascinating (though sad) that there is one of the worse examples of integration and one of the best in such close proximity. Perhaps it is because one's diversity is more ethnically based whereas the other's diversity originates from more cultural difference. Perhaps it is because there has been diversity in the first for many decades and that 'past' ideologies that have are typically far less tolerant remain prevalent.
