youtube downloader can dl them and change them to quite a few different formats, including mp3

A video is a video file of some kind. An mp3 is an audio file. You can't go straight from one to the other; it just won't work. That's like trying to record a film on a cassette.
You may be able to find some software out there to rip the audio for you, but otherwise, you'll have to remove the audio and then save it as an mp3.

i assume that he doesnt want the mp3 for a video. maybe hes doing like what i did where you download videos with music and then convert it into mp3 to take the music since the video really doesnt matter
