Mary Jane DOES have long term detrimental effects as well as many everyday things in life. People make outrageous accusations about it, it is no worse than many normal things people are exposed to in everyday life.

You eat too much shitty food, you become obese.

You abuse your time in the sun, you may get skin cancer.

You smoke pot, you have a chance of getting lung cancer due to smoking.

Will any of these things kill you instantly? No. People need to realize a majority of everyday things will destroy your body overtime just as much as pot. People choose not to accept pot because obviously in today's world anything that makes you feel good and enjoy life a little more is considered bad.

People will do what they want, in the end....

You are going to die, like everyone else.

most people who bash it are to stubborn to embrace it. Yet they will kill themselves some other way because someone didn't come out and say "Eating food can kill you, over time.

Good grief people. Stop arguing over stupid petty things. This was actually a decent debate save for the last page.

In terms of the OP....weed does have negative side effects.  When smoked, you are obviously dealing with carcinogens.  Additionally, it can lead to short term decline in memory which can negatively impact performance in school and other cognitive tasks.

Habitual use can of course lead to psychological addition, which is how you end up with the burnouts that some of you are using to justify addictive properties.

However Raven is absolutely correct that weed is not really physically addictive.  The only physical symptoms related to withdrawal are extremely mild and short term.  They don't even hold a match to withdrawal symptoms of any hard drug, including alcohol.

You can argue that it should remain illegal because of its psychologically addictive properties until the end of time, but if you're only going to base your argument on that, then you should start arguing to ban gambling, shopping and World of Warcraft as well.  They all have been shown to be extremely psychologically addicting.

I made a topic one time on legality and drug properties if anyone is interested which you probably arent.

But oh well.

fail to do anything productive with their lives. its pretty gross.

Bullshit bitch!!!!!!!

I smoke all the time, and yet I'm working for a celebrity..

Psh.. what crap saying you can't do anything productive with your life just because you smoke weed. The people who don't do anything productive are the people who CHOSE not to, and just want to stay at home and smoke. Me, I like to smoke.. but I still want a life besides weed.

EDIT: and as for the addictiveness.. thats crap as well. No way is it that addictive, no matter what anyone says. I don't know a single pot smoker who is 100% dependant on weed. I've met a guy once.. well, actually I worked with him and for the first 5 months I worked at this place I never once would have expected that the guy I worked with smoked 2-3 ounces a week and had been doing so for the past 20 years. He was perfectly normal, he was extremely intelligent (hard to believe but he was) and he was very quick, and very tallented at his job. His speech wasn't slurred, or slow, he never had short term memory loss, and more to the point is that after finding this out I asked him some questions. The first question was;
Could you quit if you had to.. or cut down? And he told me straight away that he wasn't dependant on it. He said that he often went weeks without smoking when money was low, and never once craved the need to smoke weed.
Then I asked if it had ever had a negative effect on him? He told me that he has never let it effect work.. his social life, his family life, or the people who he was around. He had never lost a job over it, nor been in trouble for it and if anything it made him think clearly about his goals, and his duties at work.

With this, I will NEVER believe that weed is addictive. Even me.. great pot smoker, I have now gone a week without smoking, and I do not feel the need to smoke right now.. I'm not having withdrawal symptoms, or losing my mind over the fact I haven't had any for a week. I will probably not even smoke again until the new year.. if that. I will probably wait till I turn 18 in 3 months, then get massively massively high.

Weed is not bad for you at all.

there's a lot of truth to it. i'm giving up weed just because it makes me feel good about doing absolutely nothing. i'm pretty sure i'd fail out of school if i smoked every day, because i just wouldn't give a shit. so i'm kind of over it. i think it's a boring person's drug.

No i haven't tried weed yet.. the thing is that I see arguments about weed and the people against smoking it seem to be wrong most of the time.
