Cocaine and alcohol are really bad for you. Weed is somewhat bad, but the only thing I'd say about it is that don't drive when you're high, but honestly, it's not THAT bad. And honestly, the only way to get addicted to weed is if you smoke it 12 times a day for 20 years consecutively, then that's plausible. And a gateway drug? That's not that true 3/4 of the time. I did oxycodone before I EVER thought about smoking weed, and when I did smoke for the first time, I didn't immediately wanna go shoot heroin. C'mon. This is why it's bad for you: Because of the serious physical and psychological effects associated with its use, Despite the fact that it is widely available, and even "accepted" in some families and communities, marijuana remains a legally restricted harmful drug. It's main ingredient is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), a mind-altering chemical. Marijuana produced today has a level of THC that is up to 25 times higher than the type sold in the 1960s. And depending on how it is "cut", it can contain hundreds of other harmful chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic (cancer-causing). Biologically, marijuana affects the brain, heart, lungs, sexual organs, and depresses the immune system. The effects on the brain include distortion of the senses, confused judgment, and decreased motor skills. Operating machinery and motor vehicles becomes dangerous. Effects on the heart include rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. Respiratory problems include pharyngitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis. Marijuana has been associated with lung, head, and neck cancers. It reduces the T-cells in the immune system that are needed to fight off infections. In pre-teens, marijuana use can retard physical growth and slow down development. High dose marijuana use can cause decreased fertility, breast enlargement in males, and breast milk production. Usually marijuana in inhaled (smoking a "joint") for it's psychological effects. Within the first few minutes, it produces a sense of heightened well being and relaxation. Now that sounds good. But with continued use, the mental effects include short-term memory loss, shortened attention span, impaired learning, social withdrawal, and decreased motivation. Anxiety attacks, panic reactions, delirium, and hallucinations can occur. So pediatricians are very concerned about the harmful effects of marijuana and we do not support its use or legalization.

This guy that works in drug court near where i live gave a speech at our school... his whole reasoning was "the people that say it's harmless live in a lab. they don't see it like it is here on the streets. it's a gateway drug. everyone that does weed does something else. that's why it's illegal." he said he sees it as harmless, could be good, and gave reasons why it should be legal, except that he claims it forces you to do other drugs...
it's a 'gateway drug' mainly because it's illegal. kids try it, realize that it isn't as terrible as they're taught to believe, and branch out believing this is true for everything. sell it in respectable establishments, and people wont have to rely on sketchy dealers who are likely to encourage them to try other things, etc. the gateway drug thing is a silly argument regardless, will power will power will power. we make the choices, not the drugs in our systems.
