Wow, I didn't know that could cause it. I have ADD and both my parents smoke. Mum said she stopped while she was pregnant, though.

Ask her if non-judgementaly if she EVER smoked during pregnancy or was exposed to large amounts of second-hand smoke from your Dad.

I'm curious.

I will but, we're talking about cigarettes, right? Not mary jane?

Sorry to hear it.

I do believe ADHD is a real disorder, however I believe it is WAY overdiagnosed, which, unfortunately leads people to overgeneralize and say claim that it does not exist at all.

Maybe it isn't overdiagnosed though. Maybe since the escalation of smoking in the past 50 years, and since our parents generation had a lot of mothers and fathers smoking, and exposed to second-hand smoking during pregnancy, we ended up with a generation of children with down-regulated brain chemistry which in turn increased the amount of mental disorders.

There could also be other factors that came into play during an AD/HD'ers developing years. Chronic infection such as strep throat has also been shown to cause AD/HD.

Abnormal doesn't mean diseased though.

We could set up a society where it was common practice to use corporal punishment on women who didn't obey their husbands every whim, then call women who despite this disobeyed and opened themselves up to punishment disordered for being unable to bring themselves to obey (for whatever reason, pride, anger, being distractable or scatterbrained or any number of reasons) despite the threat to their physical wellbeing involved. You'd probably find clusters of women with exclusive commonalities of brain patterns in this group too.

But you'll probably find I don't believe in a lot of mental disorders. For instance I do not believe in mild depression, I believe people get into a state of mind that gets called that, I just don't think it counts as a disease. A disease to me implies an objective dysfunction of the body (and perhaps by analogy of the spirit and soul). Something that can be perfectly ok in one century cannot be a disease.

What does 'real' mean in this context. There is minimal evidence suggesting that ADHD is a physiological problem. Also it basically consists of a behavioral checklist which is only a 'disorder' in the context of a specific form of social organisation.
You think it would matter at all that you had 'adhd' if you lived in a nomadic tribal context? If you lived in a primitive agricultural society?

A real problem to me would be one that is a problem regardless of context. The problem here is not your body but the interaction of your specific traits and societies specific traits - its not a matter of disease but of socioeconomic interactions.

Real in this context means the same as the definition in any other context. AD/HD may not be a problem in other generations where I may be out in the forests hunting for my family right now, but it is in this generation. Bipolar disorder may not be a problem in certain situations as well. Schizoprenia also. But in todays society, it is.

It is a disorder because it impairs functioning of everyday life *today*, not 100 years ago, but *today*. People with the DISORDER (I'm not afraid to call it a disorder, because it does impair normal functioning in key areas) do have 'abnormal' traits in regards to their brain chemistry, brain functionioning, and in other respects.

Dr. Amen, a pioneer in AD/HD actually uses a brain scan which I believe is called a SPECT scan to DIAGNOSE AD/HD. Yes, he uses real physiological signs that only occur in people with AD/HD that he observes on the SPECT scan to DIAGNOSE and TREAT AD/HD.

Thousands of studies have been published that have linked many mental disorders to physiological origins. It would be silly to try and dissaprove them all.

we all do it sometimes so yea ur not alone

Yeah but sometimes isn't what I mean... I act like a different person when I'm around him and I feel fake.

thats not healthy. you don't have an alter ego you just have an obsession to be perfect (which is impossible) around your boyfriend cause you don't wanna mess up and give him a reason to leave you.

you feel fake because you are being fake/one-sided. learn to fuse your two personas together not to keep them seperate.

I guess that's what's happening. I'm aware of it and I try to change things when I'm around him but I always still hold back and I can't figure out why. Maybe I think he'll judge me.
