I have tiger barbs, and I was used to seeing them fight. I had found that if I fed them while they were fighting, they stopped. I just found one of the larger ones killed, and obviously from a wound on its side that allowed me to see INTO the fish. How can I stop them from fighting without separating them?!
I had the same problem with my tiger barbs. What you have to do is purchase a large group of them so the nipping spreads out among all of them and no damage is caused. I started out with two, and one was constantly badgering the other and nearly killed it. Then, I went out and purchased four more, and they were fine. You really need a group of about five or six (at the very least). Post edited at 11:47 am on Jan. 3, 2009 by mbs55

Well I had three due to the size of my tank (click!). Now I have to choose between a functioning phone or a larger tank and more fish. EDIT: I purchased 3 at the recommendation of a local fish expert.
Hm. Do you have any other types of fish in the tank?

No, I had 3 tiger barbs. Two were larger than one, but the smaller one isn't the one that got killed. The larger ones really fought between themselves as opposed to ganging up on the small one.
Well if you can afford it, I would suggest getting a larger tank and get a group of at least six of them. After the six I had died, I just stopped dealing with tiger barbs altogether. Probably the worst fish I've ever owned other than a jellybean parrotfish that I had no idea was aggressive as hell. lol.

Well, with the tiger barbs, my tank was a 10-gallon. I had to upgrade to a 30-gallon because my tank was getting overstocked, but by then the tiger barbs were all dead anyway. Tiger barbs need at the very least a 10-gallon tank (and that might even be too small) because they are very active.

Yeah, I saw a video of a betta and a tiger barb... I never really knew anything would be able to kill a betta, but this shit was ... brutal. For fish.
Haha yeah. One more suggestion: try cherry barbs next time. They are much more peaceful barbs and nicer to look at, too.
