I am not sure what the laws are about regular medical emergencies. But I do know that if you told them they are legally required to give you up to 12 weeks of medical leave (paid or unpaid) within the first year if you ask for it.

I don't need that much and can't afford that much. One month is all I'm going to take even if they give me more. I think it'll become obvious here in the next month anyways. And if I didn't have to disclose it then they can't really say anything to me as long as I tell them I'm going to miss work starting in the middle of April through the middle or end of May. I only work 20-25 hours a week anyways so I don't see it as a huge deal. They won't miss me much.

I think you can be fired for with holding pertainent information, and being pregnant is something that they have a right to know about.  They may have regulations and such.  Especially if it is incorportated with some kind of insurance.  I know where I work if you don't tell them you are pregnant when you get hired, or within 3 months of being pregnant, you can lose your job.

 If it was, they wouldn't be doing it.  They would be unable to do the job, and they are required to tell within 3 months because they don't want to be responsible for harm to the fetus.  If you tell them, they move you to a different department, where you can do the job.  If you don't tell them, you can be fired.


That's still wrong. You're not legally required to tell your employer about any personal information about yourself or your family. You don't have to tell them if you're pregnant and they can't fire someone for not disclosing the information. They also aren't liable for any harm that comes to the fetus as long as they inform ALL employees of any danger that could come to the fetus in the event of a pregnancy.


It is not wrong.  They do not want to have to deal with the liability.  They are legally required to tell with the work that most of the people I work with do.  It is in the contract when they start work.  Most of it could easily cause a miscarriage or harm to others.  They can fire them for not disclosing information that can potentially cause harm to themselves or others, at that point they are considered a liability.  They may not technically be liable, but that isn't going to stop someone from suing them, and chances are that person would win.

My job had nothing about pregnancy in the writing. All the application said was that it was an equal opportunity employer and not to disclose things within the application that would imply sex, race, age, pregnancy, or marriage status etc. I'm not sure if that was supposed to go on through to the interview though.

I think that having to take a substantial amount of time off is definitely something worth mentioning in the interview. Hell, I told my potential employer about a week-long vacation.

It sounds kind of shady that you were trying to withhold that information, but I suppose that's your option to do so. Seems an awkward position to put yourself, and your employer, in though, when you just get hired and are nearly immediately trying to get maternity leave.
